Dr. Raleigh Barlowe and Mrs. Jean Barlowe have generously sponsored this fellowship to support the training of graduate students who take an institutional economics approach to the study of land resource, natural resource and environmental resource issues. Successful candidates must be strong scholars with demonstrated academic ability. They must demonstrate an interdisciplinary commitment to the social sciences and intend to combine the workings of history, law, political science, and population dynamics with their work in land resource, natural resource, or environmental resource economics and policy. Prior specialization in economics training is not required. Candidates may be enrolled in any graduate program in the University.

Professor Raleigh Barlowe

Professor Barlowe had a long and illustrious career as a teacher, researcher, and public servant at Michigan State University. He joined the faculty in 1948 when the University was still known as Michigan State College after spending 10 years as a student and research analyst of land resource problems. Over his 37-year career at MSU, he published over 100 articles as well as three editions of his popular textbook Land Resource Economics. He also chaired the Department of Resource Development (now the Department of Community, Agriculture, Recreation and Resource Studies) for ten years and mentored countless graduate students.

The Barlowes’ generous support of this fellowship reflects Dr. Barlowe’s own experience at MSU:

“Until I gave my last class lecture in December 1984, Michigan State provided me with a splendid opportunity to continue and expand my interest in working as an institutional economist conducting research, teaching classes, preparing various documents and reports, and carrying on public service programs dealing with land resource economic issues. It is my hope that I can now contribute to the future training of graduate students who have similar interests in resource economics and policy.”
